The Port Neches Middle School library
serves approximately five hundred forty-four students, thirty-six faculty members and ten
support personnel. The library is open daily to both students and
faculty from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Students may visit the library
before and after school and at scheduled times during the school day, as
their teachers may desire. The purpose of the library is to support and
serve the students, faculty, and staff. To that end, the library staff
currently upgrades features and services beneficial to students and
faculty alike.

The library now
houses more than 7800 books! There is everything from
fiction and picture books to nonfiction and reference books. The collection
includes class sets of books that teachers use in the classroom
for certain units of study. Students love the extensive paperback section!
Periodicals (Magazines/Journals & Newspapers)
Newspapers:
PNMS library receives daily The Beaumont Enterprise and The Houston Chronicle.
Magazines/Journals:
Currently
the library holds subscriptions to 46 magazines and journals
appealing to a wide array of interests and needs. Many are
professional publications that support the faculty.
Nineteen publications
are indexed in the Abridged Readers' Guide to Periodical
Literature. Other are included on the Readers' Guide
CD-ROM.
Publications that
are indexed are kept for at least five years, providing a good
base for research. All others are kept for three years.
The Library
has a special section for the professional staff. It houses the
books and magazine/journals specific to the teaching profession.
Computer
Programs
The library has recently
acquired new computers that students use
primarily for research (or simply curiosity). Currently there are nine CD-ROM's with which to search questions and
topics:
. Raintree
Science Encyclopedia
. World
Book Encyclopedia
. Grolier
Encyclopedia
. Readers'
Guide to Periodical Literature
. Current
Biography
. SIRS
Researcher (current social issues)
. SIRS
Renaissance (arts, literature, humanities)

Several computers in the
library offer students access to the Internet. Students may use the Internet
only under the supervision of the librarian or their teachers and only with
permission of their parents.
Audio-Visual
Aids:
The Library
houses a collection of 390 audio-visual programs that support the
various subjects taught. The collection includes videotapes, filmstrips, audiocassettes, and a
few laser disks and CD-ROM's.
Audio-Visual Equipment
The
audio-visual equipment used by the faculty and staff is housed in
and dispensed from the Library. Need a VCR?? Need an
overhead projector?? Need an opaque projector?? You name it
--- the library can provide it!! (---most things, anyway---) And the librarian sees that they're kept in working order.
-
Reading

turn in books, check out books and attend to other
circulation business. General library sills lessons are
taught during this time.
-
Sixth
grade language arts teachers sometime elect to schedule
their classes alternating with reading classes.
-
Classes
doing research in all grades and disciplines are
scheduled into the Library throughout the year.

In order to
promote reading and appreciation for libraries, several events
are planned throughout the year. To name a few:

The Texas

to determine which book from a list of 20 should receive
these special Texas awards. Those who read five or more

-
The
Library supports the Accelerated Reader reading program
by acquiring books for which the school has test disks
and by identifying the AR books with colored dots the for
students.
-
Periodically
throughout the year we celebrate and have "Days of
Grace" during which students are allowed to turn in
their overdue books without being charged overdue fees.
-

National Library Week in April each year, the Library
holds drawings for students each day in which students
win -------- guess what !!! ----------
